Sente Backs Legislation Protecting Women’s Choice

02/09/2017

“The Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade was paramount in furthering women’s health and defending their reproductive freedom,” Sente said. “Unfortunately however, there is a provision in current state law that would have disastrous consequences for women’s reproductive health in Illinois if their constitutional right to choose were ever overturned in court.”

Under the Abortion Law of 1975, any decision by the United States Supreme Court to overturn their ruling on a woman’s right to choose would automatically prohibit abortions in Illinois, with few exceptions. Sente-backed House Bill 40 would ensure that a woman’s right to choose would be protected in the event of changes in federal law. The bill would also remove provisions from state law that prohibit coverage for certain women’s reproductive health services for state employee health insurance and Medicaid recipients.

“As a pro-choice legislator, I strongly believe that politicians should never come between the medical decisions made by a woman and her doctor,” Sente said. “We need to take immediate action in Illinois by passing legislation that protects women’s choice and ensures extreme politicians in Washington can’t bring their ‘War on Women’ to our doorsteps.”
